Creating a capsule wardrobe for the new year

If one of your style resolutions in the new year is to start again when it comes to men's fashion, one stylist has offered his take on the key items every man should have in his wardrobe.

In addition to the basics - a pair of blue jeans, a crisp white shirt and chic shoes in brown and black - Style Shift stylist Paul Giles told the Sydney Morning Herald that chinos, a v-neck jumper, a plain polo shirt and a pair of grey track pants complete the list of essential items men need to succeed in the style stakes.

Giles told the newspaper that in particular, casualwear poses problems for Australian male shoppers, who suffer with "limited choices and options".

But with the building blocks in place thanks to a few key items in your closet, planning a wardrobe that takes you from work to the weekend does not need to be a stressful process.

Having the right accessories on hand is key. Adding a selection of tasteful work ties to the mix, for example, brightens up your basic white and blue shirts - which can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.
